I have upgraded to dapper (apt-get dist-upgrade) and bug seems to be
fixed in dapper

it should be double checked if the mencoder is in sleeping state in the
/proc directory too (to see if is not a bug in top or ps tools)
cat /proc/2534/stat
or else seems that kernel doesn't write the status of the process correctly in
the /proc directory and must be debugged
