by switching to Kubuntu, and now by a upgrading to 12.04 LTS.

Similar for me also.
I installed two .iso images using VMware Player.
I installed Ubuntu 11.10 successfully and was able to perform all software
updates.
I installed Kubuntu 11.10 successfully, but was *NOT* able to perform all
software updates, and it hung at 56% Running dpkg .

This is really resolved in 11.04. seems to start in the
application's menu, and as I , I get the Bluetooth, Wifi,
etc. menu options.
