There is no way to fix this as long as X11 is still being used. Lock
screen timing issues are usually caused by a few different things:
1- Hardware issues. Certain models of computers have known issues where
they don't generate the proper events when the laptop lid is closed or
the suspend hotkey

doesn't work _at all_ in kvm, but previous released worked fine.

@Robert: As I expected, adding the xorg.conf you specified didn't change
anything as it was already being detected as cirrus.
I tried using the vmvga driver instead of the cirrus driver, and that
made gnome-screensaver work properly. It would appear that the crash is
related to some capability of

Could you please do the following:
$ gconftool-2 --dump /apps/gnome-screensaver /apps/gnome-power-manager
/desktop/gnome/session /desktop/gnome/lockdown > screen-locking-
debug.xml
Also, could you try killing gnome-power-manager once more and starting
it the following way:
gnome-power-manager --
I am having the same problem with xchat since updating gtk+2.0 to
2.19.5-1ubuntu3. xchat and xorg use up 100% of the CPU. Downgrading to
gtk+2.0 2.19.5-1ubuntu1 solves the problem.
If this is a different issue, please let me know and I'll open a new
bug.

Please open System/Preferences/Screensaver and check the "Lock screen
when screensaver is active" checkbox.

I confirmed this on Karmic. Once the inhibit is removed, if no
keyboard/mouse activity resets the idle timer, the screensaver never
comes back up.
Uninhibiting should probably reset the idle timer.

Those settings look okay.
When the screensaver doesn't come up, is the "gnome-screensaver" process
still running? Can you start it by hitting Ctrl-Alt-L?
When this happens, do you have a context menu open, or an application
such as VNC or Virtualbox?
