In my case problem was related with full disk. Because Asus Eee 701 has only 4GB, I created only on partition for root directory. When I logged to console with Ctrl+Alt+F1, checked disk usage: $ df -h And it showed, that there is no space left. When I deleted some files, I could again log in.
