I attached two patches to bug 55977 that should handle searching RTL
text to a reasonable level, I wonder if this bug is more appropriate bug
for those two patches?

It is the intrepid-backports version (http://packages.ubuntu.com
/intrepid-backports/gimp), 2.6.1-1ubuntu3 (the official intrepid
version) has this issue too. I've the language back installed, though it
wouldn't affect this since .desktop translation get populated at build
time only.

I downloaded the source package, the "03_gimp.desktop.in.in.patch" changes the
'Name' entry of the desktop file to "GIMP Image Editor", but the upstream
translation catalogs don't have that string, only in launchpad translations.

Sorry, but you don't seem to get it. '.desktop' files are a special
case, they don't pick translations from '.mo' files, the 'gimp.desktop'
file is generated from 'gimp.desktop.in' by 'intltool-merge' picking the
translations from the PO files in the source tree. Since Ubuntu modified

Sorry for the misunderstanding! I'd the false impression that the string was
translated into Arabic, which turned out not to be true (I'm actually the main
Arabic gimp translator and Ubuntu Arabic translations team owner.)

Changing LANG in the terminal will do nothing about Arabic rendering, it
might just avoid getting Arabic messages in the terminal but then this
isn't vte issue to decide about.
