It seems that a fix is commited and is intregrated at least in Jaunty (Addons
-> Tools -> Hash for duplicates).
It worked for an example picture, I've tested.
Can someone else please confirm if it works now in Jaunty for him, too?

Thanks for responding Sebastien , will try to follow protocol now,
we have about 10 in the area that surrounds us. People using ubuntu would
rather prefer to use Bunbury in stead of Perth as we are over 200km south of
Perth.

I can confirm the patch is working on 12.04.
For all the people out there trying to get it working as soon as possible I've
created a fixed package for Ubuntu 12.04 (32 Bit). (see attachment)
You can just download and install it with the gui (double click) or in terminal
(with dpkg -i filename.d
Affects me but I found a workaround : my keyboard is french and was set
as french _alternate_. French alternate inserts insecable spaces in
place of regular spaces with the space bar. Setting i back to regular
french layout did the trick.

I can confirm this bug on jaunty.
rm -R ~/.config/gnome-session/saved-session
works as a workaround but is a no-go for usability and new users.
This bug is more than three years old and still not fixed.
Another point is: The man page of "gnome-session" is wrong:
