Paul, clicking on the panel where the menu should be does not produce
the expected menu. Instead the mouse cursor changes to a hand. I see
this is the same cursor as when then panel has been corrected and I
click and hold on an empty part of the panel. It would be my analysis
that the panel does

know how it's supposed to behave, but that is not always the case.
Also, it may be that it's my .bash_profile that's not being sourced,
since it is that file which sources my .bashrc. If I can get the

Problem solved and not a bug with gnome-terminal. My ~/.bash_profile
had:
[ -r .bashrc ] && source .bashrc
But, if I've moved out of my $HOME in the first tab, the above would
fail to source .bashrc. I resolved the issue by changing to:
[ -r ~/.bashrc ] && source ~/.bashrc

I still suffer with this problem. Does anybody have an idea what might
be a simple cure?
I've thought about mv'ing my .gnome* directories aside or the like to
determine why new users have no problems, yet I do simply because I
upgraded the OS and kept /home throught it all.

Positive I did not "simply remove menubar applet". Both the top and
bottom panels are empty, void, devoid of all life and 100% non-
responsive -- just a gray pair of gray bars, until I right-click desktop
to open a gnome-terminal (via nautilus-open-terminal) and exec "killall

I just made a significant discovery on this bug. If I add a new panel
and populate it, this new panel works correctly! The old panels still
fail as reported and can still be revived via the killall.

I have permanently resolved this issue (for myself) by creating new
replacment panels and dragging all old launchers to the new panels and
removing the old (and now empty) panels.
I can now logout and back in and everything works as expected.

restored from the prior Fedora Core 3. Upon logging into GNOME a dialog
states "Some panel items are no longer available ... these items will

3. Press To button.
4. Note that no contacts are shown. Searching doesn't help. This seems broken.

More info: if a new contact is added by way of right-clicking on an
address associated with a message that is being viewed, the new address
will work as expected. This new address will appear with all the other

The non-selectable contacts were added in a prior version of Evolution
from Fedora Core 3. While this is a brand new Dapper install, /home
(and only /home) is from the FC3 install.

User logs in through GDM, everything works as expected, but the gnome

Known work arounds:
1. right-click desktop, open gnome-terminal, killall gnome-panel
2. right-click eac
* I'd say they are not frozen since they respond to right-click and their
properities and such work fine.
* Mouseover has no effect.
* Background is set to: None (use system theme).

I would have to assume that a new user would have no problem since any
new contacts that are added work fine. It is just the contacts from the
prior version of Evolution that are having problems. A new user would
have no such contacts.

mentioned on 2006-08-16, I permanently made the problem go away as the

Issue is gone. Don't recall exactly what I did to make it go away, but
I believe it involved mv'ing the old home directory aside and then
selectively pulling things back into a fresh one.

When I first reported this bug, I could consistently reproduce the
problem every time. However, in the last week or so, I have not seen
the problem at all. I should have mentioned in the original post that I
am using sawfish for a WM, but otherwise it is a standard GNOME DE.
