I have the same in intrepid. It generally worked OK in 8.04 (although I did see this bug once or twice in 8.04 but it was a very rare thing). I 8.10 it is grey after every reboot, although it is still working as the menus respond and so on. Removing and re-adding it to the panel fixes the problem
