Agreed. Thinking some more about it, this crash happened a *lot* (every
time I booted) in the Alpha 3/4 stage. Since updating to Alpha 5 or
thereabouts it has not happened once. So my perception is that it has
been fixed.

I have the same in intrepid. It generally worked OK in 8.04 (although I
did see this bug once or twice in 8.04 but it was a very rare thing). I
8.10 it is grey after every reboot, although it is still working as the
menus respond and so on. Removing and re-adding it to the panel fixes
the problem
On my Sony Vaio FS840/W, the panel brightness control worked in 8.04 but
does not work at all in latest and greatest 8.10 beta. This machine has
an Intel Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller.

Sven, was just coming back to post the same finding. I switched from a
transparency setting to "None (use system theme)" and the applet draws
correctly since then.

I've not seen this problem for some time. It seems to be fixed for me

I don't use Ubuntu all the time at the moment, but I just specifically
re-tested the two scenarios I mentioned above on a fully patched 11.04
system, and neither causes the crash now.

For me, this occurs when using the guest session and logging out or
switching back to the original user session. It doesn't obviously cause
any other problems apart from the error report - and the loss of the
power status icon.

Not sure if this is a duplicate or not, but I also now get this when
inserting a DVD just after vlc activates.

Same or similar bug is present in 7.10. Just run "gnome-help
info:groff" and select Introduction (for example) and you get a crash
(seg fault).

Public bug reported:
I thought initially this was the dbus related problem in Bug#61381 and
Bug #110147 but now I think it's something else.
I get an error on login to gnome about gnome-settings-daemon being

When I run it from the console, I get:
