I can confirm that the upstream bug fixes this issue - at least for me.
A patched vte (karmic version) is available in my PPA if anybody is
interested in testing the patch
(https://launchpad.net/~mockenh/+archive/ppa/+packages). Hope this is
helpful.

I've applied the patch against Jaunty's gtk+2.0
(gtk+2.0_2.16.1-0ubuntu2) and
I see this bug too, it's triggered when I try to open the trash.
Removing all UbuntuOne packages removes the problem as well.

mac_v, upstream hasn't applied it because they consider it a feature
rather than a bug. From 2002 on lots of people have filled bugs against
this, the reasons for rejection of a patch are detailed here

Thanks Martin, I will create debugging logs then (may take a day till I
get to it). Apart from that I've noticed that /etc/default/acpi-support
has the line SUSPEND_METHODS='dbus-pm dbus-hal pm-utils'. I removed the
'dbus-hal' part. Also, there's the ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE=false line, but
