Since I updated to Ibex a couple of weeks ago sub-pixel hinting is
activated by default. It is possible to switch it off in the gnome-
control-center, but after a system reboot it is activated again. When I

Yes the bug is reproducible always here. I cannot say what one would
have to do to reproduce the bug on a second system. All I know is which
steps I have to take here, and these were the ones described in my
initial posting.

I have further found that I am able to select the user name field with
the mouse. Its just that I cannot see the mouse pointer.

2. Go to Image -> Mode -> Indexed, choose "Generate optimum palette -> Maximum
number of colors", change the value from 256 to 16 and hit "Convert" butt
