I also have this same problem. Running jaunty, latest updates. Ctrl-I
doesn't work, and I also have in Preferences, Mail Preferences, HTML
Messages, "Always load images from the Internet" as checked. Still no
images.

Without further testing, but I seem to have fixed this problem, by
simply changing to "root" and rming the /tmp folder.
I exited evolution
Opened a CLI
changed to root user "sudo"
changed to /tmp directory
typed "rm -R *"
started evolution
Looked at some emails and images worked.
