Because the nvidia kernel module and the nvidia-client library will be
different so that opengl applications refuse to work unless rebooted /
restarted xorg and reloaded the nvidia module.
This is my first bug report, I hope it was sufficient.

I reinstalled the deskbar-applet several times but it didn't help.
Finally I installed the latest updates today, including one for the applet and
it magically fixed the problem.
The deskbar is working properly now, sorry for my inconvenience.

Hm, for me it's not intermittent at all. It happens as soon as I've sent
a single message using Thunderbird; Gnome Shell simply becomes unable to
keep track of Thunderbird windows, and the window switcher can't launch

Paul, clicking on the panel where the menu should be does not produce
the expected menu. Instead the mouse cursor changes to a hand. I see
this is the same cursor as when then panel has been corrected and I
click and hold on an empty part of the panel. It would be my analysis
that the panel does

Daniel, no the problem hasn't been solved. It is intermittent, so I
know how it's supposed to behave, but that is not always the case.
Also, it may be that it's my .bash_profile that's not being sourced,
since it is that file which sources my .bashrc. If I can get the

proxied by the local cupsd - the download of ppd files is an exception.

I have permanently resolved this issue (for myself) by creating new
replacment panels and dragging all old launchers to the new panels and
removing the old (and now empty) panels.
I can now logout and back in and everything works as expected.

You're right Sebastien, it's there, just not visible by default.
That's fine, except there's a green frame around it. On some themes
(ubuntulooks, for one) the frame doesn't show. When it does show, the
colour seems independent of theme colours.

This was exactly my point, KDE shouldn't create the file anymore on log in if
Gnome or XFCE are installed (as I understood the bugfix).
I just tried it and you are right that it still does, so probably Bug #36256
isn't really fixed either...

new contacts that are added work fine. It is just the contacts from the
prior version of Evolution that are having problems. A new user would
have no such contacts.

Thank you for taking the time to make Ubuntu better.
You need to install the package "unrar" to be able to unpack RAR
archives.
I agree it would be nice to have an option to automatically install
missing archive handling programs like we have it for multimedia codecs.
