The solution was a disk cleanup as I suspected, took me some time to get
my hands on media large enough to hold the data.
Seems like the new Ubuntu has gained quite some "weight" since my last
install and in vanilla it takes up several gig more than my fully
populated (program wise) previous syste
BTW, it worked after I hit the +10% free space on disk

Unless off course Gnome Power Mgmt. does some install on every start
up
A hint in the error message, like "You might be experiencing problems
due to extremely low free space on your drive!" could help some people
to solve their problem themselves.
