I made a fresh install of Gutsy. Run apt-get upgrade to bring packages
up to date. Changed /etc/apt/sources.list to refer to hardy. Run apt-get
dist-upgrade. Upon reboot, message popped up asking if I want to report

The addressing of IDE devices is screwed. Rather than address as hda hdb
hdc hdd they are being addressed in Hardy as sda sdb. This works if you
only have one IDE drive on hda. It gets misinterpreted as sda, but is
functional.

This problem appears to be a kernel issue. When I select kernel
2.6.22-14-generic from the grub menu during boot up, the IDE addressing
behaves normally, and I can access all my hard drives. When I select
kernel 2.6.24-16-generic the IDE addressing is screwed, and I can only
access some of my hard
Just checking back through prior bug reports. I found two bug#222115 and
bug#221677 that may relate to this one. Going further back there are
several other complaints of not being able to access a CD drive.
