I am simply confirming this issue. (gdm version 2.27.4-0ubuntu11) Both
on install, and when running "dpkg-reconfigure gdm", gdm returns the
issue provided by the OP.
When I try to purge gdm from the system, I get

I installed the latest version of Epiphany-browser (2.28.0-4ubuntu1).
After installation, I was able to load Epiphany and view a number of web
pages without seeing a crash. Closing bug.

I had removed completely the /var/lib/gdm library (or file?) via these
commands:
cd /var/lib
sudo rm -rf gdm
then I tried to install gdm (2.27.90-0ubuntu3) again. I got the
following errors:

Binary package hint: gnome-desktop-environment
Latest update of gnome-desktop-environment (2.22.2-4ubuntu1) was posted

but that version of the guide is not available in the repositories. The

Fixed? I don't agree.
The need for abiword-gnome was taken out and replaced with a need for
abiword-plugin-goffice. But since abiword-plugin-goffice is *not*
available in intrepid either, this hasn't fixed anything.
So, the breakage has been changed, but not fixed yet.

[Intrepid] gnome-off
(Note: I have "fixed" my own installation by pulling several abiword
related packages from Debian. So, the abiword piece *is* fixed in
Debian. Now, we just need that pulled back to Intrepid.)

Comment:
I was able to get denemo to accept keyboard input on a per-user basis by
copying /etc/denemo/denemo.keymaprc to ~/.denemo/keymaprc. Not sure why
denemo does not find its own global keymap.
