I found a good GUI workaround for controlling gstreamer and event sound
preferences. One can still run the old gnome-sound-properties with a
couple of files. The attached file has 32bit/x86 and 64bit/x86-64
versions of the gnome-sound-properties program. Move the appropriate
version of this file to
illume, that "workaround" only works for OSS4 users. ALSA users should
either use the attachment in Comment #11 or use "alsasink" and/or
"alsasrc" if using gconf-editor directly.

play a video.
BTW, .avi is a container format. It can use several different video and audio
formats.

Pedro, this is designed behavior so you should probably mark this 'Won't
Fix'. In previous bugs, I have asked devs about having a gstreamer
fallback if no pulseaudio is present, and none of the devs seemes
enthusiastic about it, claiming not enough time/manpower etc. As I said

Try starting rhythmbox from a terminal and attaching the log. I would
also recommend you try playing the same files with totem to see if it is
an issue with rhythmbox specifically or something deeper (like gstreamer
or pulseaudio).

You'll probably have to turn to a PPA, Debian packages, or build from
source to get epiphany-gecko for Karmic. It was discontinued/EOL'd a few
months ago in the GNOME 2.26 series and Karmic is using GNOME 2.27/2.28
I expect the Ubuntu devs to either yank the gecko package or turn it
into a "dummy"
