A recent change changed the German layout and also removed, as far as I
can see, the layout tweaks where you could among other things enable the
rupee ₹ key. So I have no way to type it anymore.

I'm used to the tilde (~) key being a dead key that can be used to type
ñ or Ĩ. This changed with a recent update where it stopped connecting to
the next typed character. After considerable effort I found "Deutsch
(veraltet)" ie. "German (deprecated)".

I don't see this happening - but alas they revert after reboot. Not sure

So is this bug about the preference or the non-working me menu at
startup? After suffering for a while I added 'empathy -h' to my
autostart and I think this is an obvious bug that should be fixed in
Natty, it's not about cosmetics really, it means I'm not reachable by
co-workers and friends when I
GIO/ GVFS uses FUSE as a backend, to maintain compatibility with non-GIO
applications and to share the same connection state between processes.
There is no switch here, both goes hand in hand.
