Ok, so this happens only when VM Player is running with an active VM in
the foreground. The Ubuntu screen saver kicks in but after I move my
mouse, the screens aren't locked.

it's been a while and I applied all the upgrades in the meantime and
this keeps getting worse and worse. Left the machine unattended for a
while with VMPlayer 4.02 running with WinXP as guest OS. Came back to
the machine, both monitors are in standby, so far so good. Moved my
mouse and both monitor
yeah, when the screen goes on, the clock displayed isn't the current
one, it's one of several hours ago (or whenever I've left it idle).

After coming out of suspend, the active desktop gets displayed with all
the open apps, files, etc. Then, after like two seconds, the screen gets
faded to black and then is the password prompt displayed.
