Gnome-terminal is not responding to any attempts to open profile preferences.
Clicking on "Profile Preferences" from the "Edit" menu simply closes the
window; opening the "Profiles" dialog, and clicking "Edit" there, also elicits
no response.

Since upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04, I am unable to unlock my computer after it
enters the screensaver.
Log-in does work (graphical or text-VT); /var/log/auth.log just includes lines
like
