I encountered the clean window right after adding my accounts in Lucid for the
first time. Contacts load OK after I closed and reopened empathy.
I went through Help > Debug log when the contact list was empty, I only found
errors under "butterfly" as below:

This is strange. I tried on my Gutsy desktop and right after the
installation of XChat-GNOME the icons are missing. So I can confirm that
right after install from "Add/Remove..." the icon is missing. I'd report
back once I reboot to see what happens.
