Hello, I am using 64-bit Lucid (10.04.1) on my desktop, and at the
beginning gdm was working just fine. Yet after one logout, no one is
able to login to the machine again. What happens when someone logins, is
that gdm just restarts !

The reason of the problem turned out to be some script I had in
/etc/profile.d which had a bashism line !

The beep sounds very awkward using this method, also I tried to
modprobe pcspkr to get the normal beep sound, but instead that resulted
in no beeps at all ! I have attached a recording of the awkward beep

Funny thing, I installed lightdm (with --no-install-recommends), and
tried it, but it won't work. It wouldn't even start manually.
Anyways, after I removed lightdm and then rebooted. Now gdm starts on
boot.

Ubuntu 12.04.4 to Ubuntu 14.04, then I installed: ubuntu-gnome-desktop &
removed ubuntu-desktop to convert to Ubuntu GNOME.

I found out the reason of my problem. It is actually gstreamer related.
I had built/installed gstreamer0.10-plugins-good 0.10.26-1 from Debian,
while I had gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad 0.10.20-1ubuntu1 from Ubuntu
(which removed valve plugin as it got moved to -good).
So, I solved my problem by grabb
Please run:
gst-inspect-0.10 valve
If you get this error: No such element or plugin 'valve'
Then please run: apt-cache policy gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
gstreamer0.10-plugins-good
That would give you an idea about what is wrong.

There is still this problem: I used to switch between US & Arabic
layouts by pressing both ALT keys, that doesn't work now. If I change
the "Layout Switching" option to "Both Shift keys together change
layout" that option works (but by pressing both shift keys of course).
