Every day this week every few hours my pc would suddenly freeze. I
noticed this morning in System Monitor that an app called gvfsd-trash
was at 30GB RAM. I killed it. It restarted itself and in a few minutes
went up to 50GB.

This sounds like either bug 1986451 or bug 2012388. The easiest way to
tell is to run:
gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.appindicator legacy-tray-
enabled false
or
gnome-extensions disable ubuntu-appindicat...@ubuntu.com
and then log in again. If the problem is solved then it was bug

I'm running Ubuntu 23.10 kernel 6.6.7 both wayland, and Xorg protocols,
and Gnome and/or not gnome. Although it makes no difference which kernel
or protocol is running as anything up to 6.7 kernel (So far) does the
same sort of thing.

So appimages are interesting. They don't all need a profile. I have run
several that are not using user namespaces, or only need to be able to
create the user namespace and don't need capabilities so the default
unpriviled_userns profile works for them.
