Whenever I go beyond 50% brightness it freezes with:

chi, i've just upgraded from LTS to 23.04 and (with virtually no extra
packages installed), and now i get the same error
ie: the upgrader thinking i need ppa-purge,

which is also tracked as bug 1988791. So removing appindicators is the
first thing to try. The second thing is to remove other extensions.
