I noticed the same bug in mutter 40, then tried to bisect it and found
the same in mutter 3.36. So yeah this appears to be a new kernel (or
Mesa) bug. It doesn't seem to happen much if at all if you run gnome-
shell. Only in mutter for me.

Looks like upstream marked the linked bug from there as a dupe of

It happened a lot more when docked (ext USB-C monitor) than on the
laptop itself.
Kernel 5.9.1 seems good so far. I've not seen the issue yet and my
uptime is 3 days 15 hours without any suspending in between, just screen
locked.

I can reproduce the issue on focal but not on groovy. I installed the
groovy version of the ibus binaries on focal, but the issue was still
present, so this seems not to be an ibus bug.
I can type ü with a German keyboard layout, so it seems to be about dead
keys rather than accented letters as su

updates, reluctant to restart, so this was not a clean test.
Moving mouse quickly still makes the Xorg process consume signifficant
CPU% (up to 25%), but gnome-shell doesn't get near to the level it used
to consume.
