I think I have a workaround, if the problem is the same as the one I'm
facing. Press the user button on the bottom right where you enter your
password, the lock screen changes colors , re enter the password and
login will be successful.

modification time of always the same file by right clicking on it and then
selecting "properties" in nautilus I notice that the month modification time

This is expected. Fractional scaling in Xorg sessions works by rendering
at a higher resolution than your screen(s). So that increases the
likelihood of stuttering compared to integer scaling.
That specific issue will never be fixed because it's a required trade-
off to get fractional scaling work
We also recommend upgrading to Ubuntu 20.04 if you can. It seems to have
fewer issues than 18.04 still does. Although we do try to provide fixes
for both, some fixes will go under the radar and only appear in newer
versions.

proprietary Nvidia kernel driver installed but Xorg is using the
(unstable) open source driver.

The idea of upgrading to 20.04 is well-taken but involves substantial
effort to bring up my servers. Therefore, I will first try upgrading my
Nvidia to say libnvidia-cfg1-440 and libnvidia-common-440 etc bec
I don't know if this can help, but for me, the fail only happens after
login and then I never see it again.
