I've the same problem using Intel i5-8250U CPU and Intel Corporation UHD
Graphics 620 (rev 07).
The GUI freezes mouse continue moving for a while (click on the screen is not
working) then freezes. ++ opens the CLI but after complete the
login username, the password requirement never appears and

Also try setting the monitor's input source (there's a button for that
surely) to something other than 'Auto'. I fear Auto might be doing some
active scanning and wake itself up when it comes back to the connector
that you're using but wish to keep off.
