The issue there is likely that the calendar minimal width is larger than
the horizontal screen resolution, and in this case gnome-shell can't

That's probably it. My primary is 1920x1080 and my secondary is
1280x1024. I just took two windows and manually placed them and at their
smallest width they overlap. At least I know why this is happening now.

usually if the half-screen fails it's because the minimal width of the
window you try to edge is higher than half of the horizontal screen
space. What resolution are you using? Some of those applications can't
be shrinked too much, e.G calendar and nautilus are know issue, see bug
#1806279 for exam

I am using 18.04 and sometimes, whatever I type does not work. It is as
if there is no keyboard connected while I have my laptop keyboard and an
external keyboard connected to the machine. I even enabled On Screen
Keyboard and tried to type through it. Same result.

Interesting. I think Windows 10 has the same kind of limitation. Some
windows occupy more than half the screen when semi-maximized, so adding
a second window after that only gets less than half. Maybe that would be
a better design for gnome-shell than just plain refusing.
