I had the same problem with sound and brightness hot keys after
upgrading to Ubuntu 18.04 on a Lenovo P50 using Unity.
Park Ju Hyung (arter97) solution #11 worked for me but with a slight
modification:

I have a theory some instances of this bug could be caused by the non-
deterministic nature of 'get_dirty_pixel' in the mutter source code.
You don't need to know what that means, but if you have the knowledge to
test patches then please try this one:

I updated to xubuntu 18.04 a few days ago. First re-use of gimp (right
click on image and gimp is missing from the context menu) leads me to
discover gimp is no longer installed.
`which gimp` as user and as root does not find an executable

upgrade, it would make sense that it would be removed for compatibility
