Gnome crashed by itself without doing anything other than waking it up from
standby and then waiting a few minutes.
I am also using Synergy and my mouse pointer is not always on the screen
because of that. I don't know if this helps.

Normally you'd have a wired network connection icon displayed at the top

We installed 18.04 on our test machines, after erasing 16.04.
We tested setting the security banner on 05-17-2018 by using dconf key files,
and that worked (we had tested changing the greeter.dconf-defaults as well but
that didn’t change anything).

sometimes a reboot is required after suspend (which I use heavily)..

After removing media nothing happens, pressing enter nothing happens.

I spent the past couple of weeks working on a fix for this bug. It is
now completed and awaiting review by the Gnome developers. It may also
be released into Ubuntu sooner than that, depending on when Ubuntu gets
more updates to the mutter and gnome-shell packages.

When run in totem, during the first "significant" lag (> 1 second), I
ran dmesg (output copied below) and top. Top showed totem and gnome-
shell as the only processes using more than 10% of the processor.

ever being as bad as you describe.
