This problem is still present: Shotwell cannot access the camera
although it is aware of its existence (it is correctly listed in the LH
side menu, in my case a Kodak EZ200).
The recommended method of unmounting the device in a file manager seems
to be bogus for many people: no device is mounted,
But what's strange is that the issue only happens momentarily and when
returning from suspend. If I lock the screen it's correct and after a
few moments after suspend it's correct again.

Just tested this on Wayland and the situation seems slightly better. The
same test (just the terminal, no extensions) is about 2-3% of CPU usage
(compares with less than 1% for compiz) and when I turn on extensions
(particularly system monitor) it goes to 5-7%. Not great but better.

Fresh install 18.04 gdm3 did succeed occasionally, but mostly froze
completely so that power button was only way out.
There was a fix that was available in proposed repository (or something)
that made things a bit different. Failure became a rule, but it was
possible to get back with ctrl+alt+F1/F2
Can confirm, comment #2 fixed it.

As libnss_nis is shipped in libc6, and thus available everywhere. Thus
adding a depends or a drop-in is a non-starter as well it would be

talking about the virtual memory size. That's not real memory - only
address space.

Using cosmic image 20180530, I can still see the error briefly. But in
less than a second it's now replaced with a black terminal screen saying
just:
"Please remove the installation medium, then reboot."
So no, pressing Enter does not cause the system to reboot. I have to use
the power button.
