I have a theory this maybe only happens on machines that default to hi-

On an Dell XPS 9360 with a 3200x1800 display it also defaults to 200%
and I reliably reproduce this bug with the 18.04 final image.
I can confirm setting the scaling to 100% in the live session resolved
the crash.

it is possible, that this is the same issue, I also entered the password
wrong the first time it appeared today, the second login trial with the
correct password lead me into the black-screen.
