1) Download the Ubuntu MATE 18.04 live CD.
2) Press space while booting to display the syslinux language menu. Select

Workaround :
* Hitting Alt+F1 return to GDM who complain about a “login fail” and ask
another time my password.
* Another successful password attempt finally launch Gnome correctly.

Reply to #8, problem seems to have gone away on it's own today. Had
tried multiple DE's that didn't work and went into Unity. A message that
"Updates are available" appeared. Clicking on it installed nothing but
probably ran `sudo apt update`, `sudo apt upgrade` in the background.
Rebooted into 16.

Thanks for your reply. No I don't have any nvidia card. It is a Dell
640m laptop with Intel integrated graphics (quite old one that I use
mainly for testing). Symptoms do look similar but wayland session used
to work flawlessly with 17.10 on this system. Here the output of lspci:
lspci -k
00:00.0
Beside the possible wayland related bug, I think the main issue here is
that expected behavior would be for gdm3 to be able to show the login
screen (where the default (xorg) session works). This is actually the
behavior observed using lightdm.
