output between Xorg and Wayland login screen, since the same symptom
occurs there.

Ah, seems to be a bug(?) in GNOME Software - it's only actually throwing
away any search word less that 3 characters. So the search "oh my" is
rejected because none of the words are long enough. "oh my gir" would
just search with "gir".

Confirmed. For me this bug happens with Radeon cards (using the 'radeon'
kernel module).
And also confirmed this is not a duplicate of bug 1723577. I was trying
to reproduce bug 1723577 when I encountered this one instead.
