cat /proc/`pidof totem`/io
reveals totem's biggest skip coincides with a disk _write_ of some sort.

When I go to settings -> devices -> displays and change the scaling
factor from 200% to 100% and hit apply, the whole desktop crashes and
I'm back at the login prompt.
