I don't know anything about gnome internals, but with trying to strace,
I see this:

OK, it turns out that just reverting to Adwaita's battery actually
creates as many problems as it fixes (see unity7 and unity-greeter). So
let's not do that.
I now know how to fix this properly using Inkscape. Just need to get
around to editing all 30-40 battery icons by hand. Will do it this
week

The following seems to have got me running normally again. Working on the
theory the keyring file was somehow corrupted, I deleted the keyring file...
rm ~/.local/share/keyrings/login.keyring
...and rebooted. A new keyring file has been generated and everything looks
good for now!
