I'm just reporting in that since upgrading metacity using Alberts' PPA,
I have not experienced a further crash. The nearest I came was a screen-

Another cut/paste of 2 folders containing 1000 images crashed the whole
Unity desktop (still Ubuntu 16.04). I had to force computer to turn off,
loosing unsaved data.
Testing Ubuntu since some days, that's probably the last days for me. I
don't need a modern desktop that can't move files...
