I've tried tz's workaround and it doesn't work for me. I'm on Ubuntu
14.04 with up to date updates. Highly annoying as every time I want to
connect to my phone I have to pair it again (or remember the random 6
digit pin code that gnome-bluetooth insists I use).

I think that's backwards. Google requires OAuth, but Evolution does not
DIRECTLY support it. Gnome now has a separate module for OAuth.
