None of the apps I have tried including Weather, Google maps, OSM Touch
and SensorStatus are able to use the phone's GPS. The SensorStatus app
actually reports "Found supported backend", but finds no position or
other GPS data.

I disagree, the bug shown in the link gives a "ps" output when the
problem is present and show no excessive CPU usage while this bug has
gvfs stuck in a tight loop somewhere, my backtrace was snapshot when
this 100% CPU usage pattern was present, other comments in the bug have
the same outcome.

I confirm that the PDF provided by OP is extremely slow. Scrolling is
very sluggish, and it takes several seconds to render a page.

After a GTK update this morning (2014-09-13, via update manager on
14.04. LTS), the thumbnail generation on evince 3.10.3 became very slow.
Whenever loading the next thumbnail image, evince completely hangs. This
makes reading documents very annoying.
