No, that is not true. Gnome Panel can be started from X11 and LightDM,
but may as well be started from Wayland and GDM

horizontal scrollbar, there is also what is either an even smaller
vertical scrollbar or up and down arrows which work.

I have a Canon PowerShot S95 and it is not detected either in Ubuntu

To correct myself, the UUID in gears icon > Edit partition > Type
dropdown "Linux Swap (0657fblah-blah-blah)" seems to be the UUID for the
type of partition, not the partition found on disk. So there seems to be
no way to determine disk UUID from gnome-disks, let alone copy it.
