I also encountered same issue. The setting is confusing. It has option
to connect on startup but it doesn't connect until empathy is started
manually.

gksu gedit /etc/pam.d/lightdm
Under the first line "#%PAM-1.0" paste the following:

I had symlinked /var/www/wordpress to a folder in my home directory.
After unlinking the link with unlink command, then mkdir
/var/www/wordpress, nautilus still shows the wordpress directory having
all the contents of my directory, though ls shows the new directory is
empty.
I observe exactly the described issue with the exact same settings in
dconf, but with gnome-settings-daemon 3.8.5ubuntu11.1.
