Hi, I know this bug is old but still shows.
The problem seems to be that certain CODECS are incompatible with FLV and MKV.
If I reencode in another codec (ffmpeg) it plays correctly.
This may be the reason why @debesh can play [SOME] mkv videos.

With me whenever I was creating a folder named "data", an emblem of
"note" was being created onto it, and Nautilus was crashing when opening
this folder. rm -rf ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata/ as Vlad pointed out
solved it for me.

As far as I know, this fix can't be backported. I don't think it's
possible to properly support GstMiniObject because it wasn't designed
with introspection in mind (remember, the GStreamer 0.10 API is almost 7
years old now). I don't believe it's possible to fix this without
breaking the 0.1

I also have an Intel machine, in my case the hotkeys would suddenly
stop working. Did you testing the keys on LiveCD/LiveUSB as it says in
the guide you posted? If they work then you can be sure it's not a
hardware problem.
