After reading the difference between halt and poweroff, I have to
withdraw my comment. poweroff works indeed on the server. But

As an added note, killing the errant gnome-power-statistics process lets
me access it correctly from the icon again (and it seems to properly
close itself after that, at least, for now).
Next time this happens, I'll see if I can hunt down where the hung/sad
process is coming from before I kill it.
This problem occurs also in MyPaint.

Still a problem with Xubuntu12.04: Xfburn as well as Brasero don't

As the problem occured also with a USK key, I rebooted my laptop, and after
that, when attaching the USB music player I did not get a suggestion box but
only nautilus opened showing it's contents.
So I think it's a regresion.
