GTK+ 3.4 has introduced a bug with transparent panels. Specifically,
upstream gtk+ commit 7603e6e4 breaks setting the "background-image"
style property to a cairo pattern. This is the method that gnome-panel
uses to simulate transparent backgrounds.

NB: I logged this bug against gnome-panel because that's where it's
going to be seen, but it's actually a bug in GTK -- the upstream bug is
against GTK.

Sometimes when I log out these days, the screen goes blank, then a big
NVIDIA logo comes up on the screen, and the system freezes. I can't
Ctrl+Alt+F1 into a terminal, and no other input seems to do anything. I
have to hard-reboot the computer at this point to get back to the
apport information
