The first bad version is gvfs-1.8.0-1. This regression is caused by
05_shared_libdaemon.patch. It isn't exactly clear to me why this is, but
if I take out the patch and build with the libgvfscommon0 package as was
done in gvfs-1.8.0-0ubuntu1 and earlier, I can successfully mount the
phone.

If a beginner user experiences the above and its password contains
special characters then it could prevent the user from logging in -

stated that there is a fix available for this bug in /some/ Ubuntu
