Another "workaround" for this issue is to be "very patient and hit enter a few
times while the screen is frozen". After a while (minutes) the password screen
appears.
I've seen this happen to another guy in the office and he makes a hard
reboot every time (figures it is a complete freeze)

Alex Korobkin, the DVD region problem seems to be bug 502426 (though it
doesn't have steps to reproduce at the moment). If it's common, maybe
its solution should be designed in tandem (e.g. part of the same alert
box).

Simply creating that file would not be entirely enough. As in while that
seems to force the fsck, said file does not get removed automatically.
And maybe even shouldn't be removed, unless it was created by gdu.

I just set Auto login to on for my account and Oneiric did not start. My
PC stopped on the "Checking Battery State" screen and gdm did not load.
I searched and searched until I finally looked in syslog and saw the
gdm_session_direct_get_username text. Through google I stumbled onto
this thread.

Not only is displaying (very!) slow, but the content of the terminal
gets borked as well, meaning contents of the terminal are vanishing!
I find myself pressing ctrl-l (refresh display) repeatedly in vim to
display my file correctly. This is a pretty serious bug for me, serious

I realise that although the words doesn't appear, if I write the
password and hit enter, it works. My first day with linux, so I start

DVD drive with a region not yet set, but it definitely was the case with
11.04 which I tested with a new drive.

After the initial login, when trying to access files through nautilus,
compiz appears to freeze up as well as nautilus. I cannot use the mouse
to navigate to folders or bookmarks. Re-logging in fixes this. Ubuntu
