I just made my changed version that way because:
1) I had no idea of what I was doing mostly (main reason), yet I just wanted to
fix it
2) I like how the top of the sidebar integrates seamlessly with the bottom of
the titlebar
3) To me, there's no problem between the sidebar and the toolbar, and
@Chris, could you list some next actions for this bug (either by you or
others) that would help in moving it towards a solution?

Problems is intermittent but frequent. ~ 10-20% depending on the command run.
It also seems to happen with xterm so it may be an xserver problem.
I did have the terminal in full-screen mode and the problem would occur
