Since a quite a while backlight management on my notebook (Dell Latitude
D830) is quite broken. It started when a patch to manage the backlight
in the kernel intel-driver was introduced.

I do not think it has been fixed; I can't know for sure, but even my
desktop seems to "suspend" when I leave it alone for enough time. And
I've checked the power settings; looks fine (set to "don't suspend"
during install it seems).

I tried your "Never" turn off screen. Seems that it is only a new menu
entry but not backed by actual code. It folds to the "1 minute" setting.
Simply choose "Never", log out, log in, and you are on "1 minute".

it has its own tracking but it should probably unset dpms otherwise xorg
will turn off the screen
