Because of a problem with fglrx I have had to reinstall from scratch. I
found that I could not reinstall from Ubuntu beta 2 or daily builds and
have had to reinstall natty then upgrade. (if it might give any clue to
the current bug the oneric install could not start the screen with or

I just installed 11.10 Beta 2 and it worked fine.
After I did a full update it was still working fine, but when I installed AMD
proprietary drivers, from Hardware additional drivers and restarted, the
problem started again.
I'm not sure but it may be something related there, after install it and
11.10 beta 2, 32bit dvd iso on a 8Gb USB stick using unetbootin 555 with 1024mb
persistance
alongside install on 160gb unpartitioned space

I just ran the update manager and it did a partial upgrade (lots of
package changes). After rebooting I tested this again and it is working
fine.

disabled, but this is apparently ignored, for some reason:

but then again that's just -bin, not the actual package which caused
trouble. The other dpkg -S /ls -l output looks
any chance to get a backtrace with the new package? apport doesnt seems
to be picking those and its just marking it as dup instead.

The "Open With" > "Other Application" dialog already has a "Find
applications online" [sic] button, which opens a broken dialog listing
applications. (Broken because it doesn't actually let me install any of
them.)
I think a solution to this bug involves (1) replacing that dialog with a
mode of Ub

directory and it did selected a photo i have there, could you give us
some specific steps in order to reproduce the issue? Thanks in advance.
