OK, managed to fix it following this advice:

That required some repair on the GRUB command line, set root and all
that, then got my system to boot into Ubuntu and had to do both update-
grub and g
I feel like the original issue is likely caused by Paragon software that
creates so called "empty" partitions. All looks like fdisk can remove
those (I didn't know). It would be nice if you tried fdisk -l first as
fdisk reports empty partitions.

multiple items with the cursor keys (and the space and CTRL keys)
practically impossible when the final item in the window is reached
because the items that scroll up are never readable at the bottom of the

I believe my error was down to an IMAP server problem. I thing resetting
the password was just a way to encourage Evolution to re-try the
connection.
I'd recommend anyone encountering this error to try the connection with
Thunderbird which can present a more informative message. In my case it
was

then tried adding the entries for ubuntu one to the login keyring (if
it's not there already). does either of these help?

Also update manager doesn't really have a reason for asking for password
- it doesn't update yet, it could asked after I choose to do an update.
As about Ubuntu One - Dropbox behavior is much better - it just
remembers password not using keyring.
