I conclude that there is a problem (?) with udev that lacks support for
nested partition http://www.ata-atapi.com/hiwtab.html#T4 and probably
only linked extended partitions are properly supported. That explains

I have been advised in #ubuntu-desktop that in 11.10 the behaviour has
been changed...
In 11.10 Empathy does not need to be running at login, instead it brings
you online without running empathy. If someone IMs you, and you click on
the indicator *then* it runs empathy.

Everytime I log in I am presented with a window prompting me to enter my
password to unlock the keyring. In order to ensure that I'm simply not entering
the password incorrectly, I put it in a text file and copy paste it into the
window. The window reappears approximately 4

Debian packages the new release which presumably has this issue fixed,
then it is very easy to sync Debian's newer package to Ubuntu.
